Sitting can be bad for your mental health
For many people now, sitting at a desk for hours at a time is just part of the job. No wonder then that research is continuing to reveal links between prolonged sitting and a number of serious health issues. A recent study has found that sitting for longer than 6 hours a day may also increase risks of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
The research team, led by psychological scientist Michelle Kilpatrick of the University of Tasmania, found that employees who sat for long stretches at work also experienced increased rates of anxiety and depression compared to colleagues who didn’t spend as much time sitting.
how can employers and managers address the findings? Whereas with more physically demanding jobs the risk was with injury – organisations need to look again at the impact on their workforce of the jobs that they do.
