What is Supervision?

Supervision is a vital component for any practitioner who offers therapy, counselling or works in a relational environment and is a requirement of professional bodies within the counselling, psychotherapy and therapy fields. The supervisory relationship offers a meta-perspective – a way of rising above the clinical work and reflecting on how to make the clinical practice even safer and more effective.
Supervision is a professional service where a counsellor, psychotherapist or therapist uses the services of another counsellor or psychotherapist to review their work with clients and also their personal and professional development. Supervision can be a 1 to 1 appointment or group supervision shared with other therapists.

Why would I need supervision?

As mentioned above, the professional bodies e.g. BACP, UKCP, require practicing therapists to be supervised. Supervision protects the client by involving an impartial third party in their work and also improves the skills and abilities of the therapist to ensure their effectiveness.
Supervision gives the therapist the opportunity to reflect on how they relate to the client and their own responses. The insights gained from the perspective of another therapist may also assist in improving the therapist's effectiveness.

What about confidentiality?

Supervisors and supervisees are contractually bound to protect the client. Details of sessions with clients may be shared with the supervisor but client confidentiality is safeguarded through:
a) changing identifying information so that details cannot be traced back to the client, and
b) any information discussed within a supervisory appointment is covered by a confidentiality contract and cannot be shared outside of the supervision session.
