Dr Emily McGeown

Dr Emily McGeownHCPC registered counselling psychologist DPsych, MSc, BSc

Dr Emily McGeown is a fully qualified counselling psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Emily works with:
Children, adolescents and their parents
Adults affected by trauma.

Emily's approach is integrative. She offers EMDR and trauma-focused CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) for trauma-focused work. Emily is registered with several health insurance companies including PruHealth, Simplyhealth, CIGNA, WPA, Aviva and PPP healthcare.

Work with children
Emily offers play-based therapy sessions for children. Play is a child’s natural medium of self expression. Children can find it difficult to express themselves by talking directly about what is happening to them and how they are feeling. Imagery and metaphor are important in enabling children to understand and express these feelings.
Children can express their emotions and thoughts through various media available including sand, paint, clay, playdough, puppets and storytelling/books.

CBT for children and adolescents:
Child and adolescent CBT sessions share similarities to CBT sessions with adults, although the ideas are adapted to suit a child’s understanding and incorporate play for younger children. Emily will use simple and creative ways to explain the ideas to your child and to help them identify and work through their thoughts and feelings.

Parenting support
Emily offers parenting support to help enhance the parent-child relationship and to help improve children's behaviour, self-esteem and confidence. Emily has experience of offering 1-2-1 parenting support and facilitating parent support groups (Webster Stratton).

Emily offers sessions based on the principles of Theraplay®.  This is a form of therapy for 0 – 12 year olds (although has also been used successfully with adolescents and adults).  Theraplay® is designed to enhance attachment, raise self-esteem, improve trust in others and create joyful engagement.  Theraplay® is based on the natural patterns of healthy interaction between parent and child, and is personal, physical and fun! Theraplay®  sessions create an active and empathic connection between the child and the parents, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding. Theraplay® has been shown to be helpful for children on the autistic spectrum and who exhibit ADHD-like behaviour.

Emily offers clinical supervision for therapists working with children and families.
