Talking about problems or emotions can be difficult and words can sometimes get in the way or not express enough about what you are trying to say. Being able to communicate through another medium (art) may be easier.
Art Psychotherapy, also known as Art Therapy, is a form of Psychotherapy that uses art to help people express themselves and explore difficult thoughts and feelings.
The art making process allows you to work at a pace that suits you, and it is up to you how much, if at all, you want to say about your artwork.
Art Psychotherapy can help with many issues. Some common reasons for coming to Art
Psychotherapy are:
• Depression
• Abuse
• Anxiety
• Trauma
• Stress
• Bereavement
• Loss
• Self harm
• Communication problems
• Relationship problems
• Addictions
Art therapy is not about being a good at art but about expressing feelings and thoughts in a different way. The Art Therapist can help get you started, and can suggest some initial activities if you’re feeling stuck.
Your work won’t be judged by the therapist but will be used by the therapist to help you find your own meaning in your work.
We now offer Art Therapy at The Horsforth Centre through our experience therapists. For more information see our Art therapy section.
